In a perfect world, your natural teeth are your best option. The reality is people get hurt or aren't born with a good set of teeth or just don't take proper care of what nature has given them.

Dental implants are the closest thing to nature's design and offer hope for re-creating a new, healthy, and confident smile. A dental implant is a small part made of titanium or titanium zirconium. It is placed in the jaw bone and replaces the missing tooth root. The implant can be surgically inserted under local anesthetic on an outpatient basis. Titanium is generally well-tolerated by the human body, and bone has been shown to bond well to titanium.

ContentOnce healed, the artificial root acts as a base for fixing individual crowns and multi-tooth bridges. The implant can also be used as an anchor for an entire dental prostheses.

A step-by-step guide to a new smile

A thorough diagnosis, individual consultation and competent dental treatment are vital for successful dental implantation. The journey towards a new smile may be less complicated and time-consuming than you would think.

The new teeth

Crown, bridge or denture – the dental laboratory uses an impression to produce the individual restoration, which will be inserted after healing.

Diagnosis

Your dentist investigates and assesses your treatment options using X-rays. S/he discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various denture solutions. If implants are the choice of treatment, in most cases your dentist will refer you to a surgical specialist such as a periodontist or oral surgeon. Using X-ray images or computer tomographs (for three-dimensional imaging) and plaster models, the length and diameter of the implant are determined by the specialist.

Afterward, the position of the implant is established. Sufficient bone must be present for implantation. There are patients who have insufficient bone and require bone augmentation. This may happen, for example, if a tooth has been missing for a long time – the jaw may have slowly receded. As a result, the bone will be replaced by bone grafting material.

Healing

A healing period between six weeks and a few months is necessary to ensure the implant is securely attached to the jaw bone, After approximately one week, the stitches are removed. Patients should keep in mind that diligent oral hygiene is vital for healing.

Implantation

The dental implant (an artificial tooth root) is normally inserted under local anesthetic. The surgical specialist creates a suitable "bed" in the jaw bone in which the implant is placed. Depending on the individual case, a temporary restoration may be placed on the implant during the healing stage. This allows the patient to enjoy a natural looking smile early in the process.

The parts of a dental implant

  • Dental implants are nothing new. They have been used to permanently replace teeth since the mid 60s.
  • A small titanium screw is inserted into your jawbone. Titanium is a metal accepted by the body and heals together with the bone tissue to form a new, stable tooth root.
  • An abutment is a ceramic or titanium component that ensures a secure fit between the dental implant and the crown.
  • Once the dental implant and the abutment are in place, your dental professional fits the crown, the bridge or the prosthesis.

Copy of Ceramic Braces

Ceramic Braces or Tooth Colored Braces are made of ceramic or composite materials. They are very strong and generally no stain. Adults like to choose ceramic because they "blend in" with the teeth and are less noticeable than metal. These are the type of braces actor Tom Cruise had.

The ligatures (tiny rubber bands) that hold the arch wire on to the ceramic brackets are often white or clear. This looks great at first, but the ligatures can stain. Unless you eat a lot of curry, smoke, or drink a lot of black coffee, this generally isn't a problem. Note that the ligatures are changed each time you get an adjustment - usually, monthly. It's only the ligatures that stain, not the brackets themselves.

Thonglor Dental Hospital is proud to offer our patients Inspire Ice braces, manufactured by Ormco, the highest quality of aesthetic braces on the market. These braces are made of pure monocrystalline sapphire and are very translucent. They are very strong and do not stain. They are also one of the only completely transparent brackets on the market. Inspire ICE also is one of the lowest profile ceramic bracket on the market, which means that it does not stick out as far as many other clear braces.

Inspire braces are one of the only in which results are not compromised and the speed of treatment is not extended. The braces do the same job as metal braces and can be used in conjunction with powerbands, rubber bands, and other orthodontic devices to achieve maximum results.

Bottom line, if you are concerned about the appearances of metal braces and don't mind dishing out the extra money to make your braces go invisible, than Inspire braces should be among your top options.

Clear braces offer a unique advantage over conventional metal appliances. The material composition and design allows an uncompromising level of care and enable you to look good during treatment. Many people may not even be aware that you're wearing braces at all.

Modern Braces

When most people think of metal braces they think of the big clunky braces of the past. They were extremely uncomfortable and more than capable of cutting your lips. From a cosmetic point of view they were, at best, unattractive and are wholly responsible for the stigma attached to braces today. However, times have changed and so have braces.

Modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than old fashioned braces. They have what is called a low profile design, which is less irritating to your lips. They also have special contours to make your orthodontic treatment go faster and be less painful.

Do Adults Really Get Braces?

Nowadays people of all ages are getting braces. For a variety of reasons, many people did not have the opportunity to seek orthodontic treatment when they were children. There are also people who have dental problems later in life and wish to correct them. Hollywood actor Tom Cruise wore braces in his late thirties because his mouth wasn't closing properly.

Other people received orthodontic treatment when they were young, but they didn't continue wearing their retainers for long enough following the initial treatment. The result is that their teeth are now a little bit crooked. Now they are unhappy with their smile so they get braces too. If you are worried about how you will look during the treatment try and focus on the winning smile you will have in the future.

Do modern braces hurt?

Orthodontic companies are constantly testing their braces to try to find ways to make the treatment painless. We have a number of designs for braces which minimize the pain you will feel. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a way to avoid the pain when the braces are first put on, or when the braces are being tightened. There will also be some discomfort in the first few weeks as your mouth adjusts to the braces. Having braces should not disrupt your lifestyle in any way although avoiding sports such kick-boxing would be advisable.

How will the braces affect my diet?

Certain foods and drinks may lead to damage. You should avoid drinking lots of fizzy drinks and keep in-between-meal snacks to a minimum. Very crunchy and sticky foods are capable of breaking your braces. Toffee and chewing gum must be avoided. Really enjoyable hard foods can be chopped up and chewed gently! You may also find chew difficult following the placement and tightening of your braces.

How do I know my teeth won't go back to the way they were when the braces come off?

After braces are removed, the teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. They must, therefore, be held in their new positions for a long time with retainer braces until they have settled. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Retainers are either removable appliances or thin wires stuck onto the tongue side of the teeth. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

Dental Bridge

Dental bridge is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by joining permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants.

Type of Bridge

  • Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.
  • Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  • Maryland bonded bridges (also called a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge) are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.
