Oral Hygiene:

  • Brushing: Brush after every meal and before bedtime using a toothbrush specifically designed for braces.
  • Flossing: Clean between teeth using special orthodontic floss or floss threaders at least once daily to remove trapped food particles.
  • Interdental Brush (Proxabrush): Use to clean hard-to-reach areas around brackets and between teeth.
  • Fluoride Products: Use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to prevent cavities.
  • Saltwater Rinse: Rinse with warm salt water to help reduce irritation and kill bacteria.

Foods to Avoid:

  • Hard foods: Ice cubes, nuts.
  • Sticky foods: Chewing gum, dried squid.
  • Crunchy foods: Pork rinds, chips.
  • Biting with front teeth: Avoid biting hard fruits (e.g., guava, mango, rose apple) with front teeth. Cut into bite-sized pieces and chew with back teeth.

Managing Problems:

  • Loose or bent braces/wires: Contact your dental clinic immediately for adjustment. The first repair may be free; subsequent repairs may incur a fee.
  • Irritation or sores: Apply orthodontic wax over brackets or wires causing irritation, or consult your dentist.
  • Pain or slight tooth mobility: Mild discomfort in the first 3–7 days is normal. Take over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen as advised by your dentist.

Consistent Practices:

    • Dental visits: Attend regular check-ups for braces adjustments and oral health monitoring.
    • Scaling and cleaning: Professional cleaning and cavity checks every 6 months due to higher risk of gum inflammation and cavities.
    • Retainers: After braces removal, wear retainers as instructed to prevent teeth from shifting back.
